Portlaoise Heritage Trail
Portlaoise Heritage Trail will be officially opened on Thursday, 28 August, 2008. The ceremony will take place at County Hall where Tom Jacob, Chairman of Laois County Council and Teddy Fennelly, Chairman of Laois Heritage Society will jointly perform the opening.
This has been a major project undertaken by the Society. A first official walk of the Trail will be led by Michael Parsons, a Vice-President of the Society. It will start at the James Fintan Lalor Monument outside County Hall. There are 26 sites marked on the Trail, including the remaining tower of the Old Fort of Maryborough. A special brochure has been published identifying all the sites and providing information of each one.
The Heritage Trail has been funded out of the Society’s own funds and initiatives. Laois Leader and the Heritage Council have given generous grants to complete the project. Laois Heritage Officer, Catherine Casey provided invaluable advice and help.
Portlaoise Construction have provided part sponsorship of the brochure. They restored the Old Infirmary in a very laudable way and this is one of the sites on the Trail.
The sub-committee who spear-headed the project included Teddy Fennelly, Mary Lalor, Michael Parsons, Andrias MacCuilleann and Kathleen O’Brien, TC.

Laois Heritage Journal

The new journal being published by Laois Heritage Society is currently with the printers. It is planned to launch it in early August. Details later. It comes in a new format, size and design. There are many fascinating articles included. This should have widespread appeal.
This is Journal No. 4. It is published every two years. The Society would welcome suitable contributions for the next publication.
The sub-committee responsible is: Jack Hyland (Chairman), Mary Lalor (Hon Sec), Ronnie Mathews and Teddy Fennelly.

Annual Outing

The Society’s annual outing took place on Saturday, 21 June 2008 to Kilkenny. It was the longest day of the year and one of the wettest in this very wet year. Yet a bus-load of heritage enthusiasts turned up for the trip and all enjoyed the day.
It began with a visit to St Canice’s Cathedral where there was a guided tour of the historical edifice. Then it was on to Rothe House which has been magically restored by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society. There are so many wonderful things to see that it is a must for any visitor to the Marble City.
On the way home there was time to stop off at the Heritage Park and Centre in Castlecomer and a tour of the coal mining history exhibits. It is a fascinating presentation.
